Alors qu'en Belgique la gauche a bien du mal à affirmer clairement une solidarité inconditionnelle envers la résistance palestinienne – et se perd même dans des polémiques démobilisatrices sur la nature prétendument «islamiste-réactionnaire» des manifestations pour la Palestine - dans cet Appel publié dans «The Guardian» du 16 janvier 2009, un grand nombre de personnalités académiques, britanniques et internationales, choisissent clairement leur camp. Elles affirment qu'il faut souhaiter la défaite d'Israël et que des accords de cessez-le-feu et d'aide humanitaire ne sont pas des réponses suffisantes pour résoudre réellement le conflit. Les massacres de Gaza sont la phase la plus récente d'une guerre qu'Israël livre contre le peuple de Palestine depuis plus de soixante ans. Le but de cette guerre n'a jamais changé: utiliser une force militaire démesurée pour éradiquer les Palestiniens en tant que force politique capable de résister à l'appropriation en cours par Israël de leur terre et de leurs ressources. La guerre d'Israël contre les Palestiniens a fait de Gaza et de la Cisjordanie de gigantesques prisons politiques. Il n'y a aucune symétrie dans cette guerre au niveau des principes, des tactiques et des conséquences. Israël est responsable de son déclenchement, de son intensification et d'avoir mis fin à la plus récente trêve militaire.

Israël doit perdre. Il n'est pas suffisant d'appeler à un autre cessez-le-feu ou à plus d'aide humanitaire. Ce n'est pas assez de pousser à la reprise du dialogue et de reconnaître les inquiétudes et les souffrances des deux côtés. Si nous croyons au principe démocratique d'autodétermination, si nous affirmons le droit de résister à l'agression militaire et à l'occupation coloniale, alors nous sommes obligés de prendre parti... contre Israël et avec le peuple de Cisjordanie et de Gaza.

Nous devons faire tout ce qui est en notre pouvoir pour empêcher Israël de gagner sa guerre. Israël doit admettre que sa sécurité dépend de la justice et de la coexistence pacifique avec ses voisins et non sur l'usage criminel de la force.

Nous pensons qu'Israël devrait immédiatement et sans conditions cesser son agression contre Gaza, mettre fin à l'occupation de la Cisjordanie et renoncer à sa prétention de contrôler des territoires au delà de ses frontières de 1967. Nous appelons le gouvernement britannique et le peuple Britannique à prendre toutes les initiatives nécessaires pour contraindre Israël à satisfaire à ces exigences, en commençant par un programme de boycott, de désinvestissement et de sanctions.
